Sourcing flexible water tanks from a Chinese manufacturer for the first time involves a different set of questions than buying from a domestic distributor. Lead times, certifications, sample procedures, and minimum order quantities all work differently. This checklist covers what experienced B2B buyers verify before placing a first order.
1. Confirm Factory vs. Trading Company
Many suppliers listed on Alibaba or Made-in-China are trading companies — they source from factories and add a margin. There is nothing wrong with this for some buyers, but if you need technical customisation, direct quality control access, or OEM production, a direct factory relationship is preferable.
Ask for: factory business registration documents, photos of the production facility, and ISO or quality management certificates issued to the factory directly (not a third-party agent).
2. Verify the Welding Method
Flexible water tank quality is determined largely by the seam. There are two main methods used in China:
- HF (high-frequency) welding — creates a molecular bond significantly stronger than the fabric itself when done correctly. No adhesive is involved, so there is no degradation over time from adhesive breakdown.
- Hot-air or adhesive bonding — faster and cheaper to produce, but seams can delaminate under prolonged UV exposure or mechanical stress.
Ask specifically which welding method is used and request a photograph of a cross-section of a finished seam. A reputable HF-welded manufacturer will have this available immediately.
3. Clarify the Fabric Specification
Fabric weight (gsm) and coating thickness (mm) directly determine the tank's working life and pressure resistance. Standard B2B export grade is 850 to 950 gsm with approximately 0.9 mm nominal thickness. Lighter fabric (650 gsm) is appropriate for short-term or low-pressure applications; heavier fabric (1,000 gsm and above) is used for industrial and large-capacity tanks.
Ask for the fabric specification sheet, including gsm, thickness, tensile strength, and UV resistance rating.
4. Request a Sample Before a Full Order
Any credible manufacturer will provide a physical sample. For a first order, request a production sample at your specified capacity and fitting configuration, a fabric swatch of the actual material to be used in your production run, and a pressure or fill test video if the capacity is above 10,000L.
Sample costs typically run USD 100 to 500 depending on size, with a production lead time of 7 to 15 working days. Reputable suppliers credit the sample cost against your first order.
5. Understand MOQ and Lead Time Realistically
Minimum order quantities for flexible water tanks from Chinese factories typically range from 5 to 50 units depending on size and customisation level. Custom sizes with non-standard fittings typically require higher minimums than standard product.
Production lead time for standard configurations runs 20 to 35 working days after order confirmation and deposit receipt. Rush production is sometimes available but adds cost and should not be relied upon for first orders.
6. Confirm Fitting Specifications in Writing
Fitting mismatches are one of the most common causes of project delay when sourcing overseas. Before finalising your order, confirm in writing: inlet and outlet diameter (DN size and thread type — BSP or NPT), number of fittings and their positions, whether fittings are pre-attached or supplied separately, and ground sheet requirement and material.
7. Agree on Inspection Access
For orders above a certain value, buyers often arrange third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas, or similar) before shipment. A credible factory will accommodate this without hesitation. If a supplier refuses pre-shipment inspection, treat that as a significant red flag.
