What Is a Flexible Water Tank?
A flexible water tank is a collapsible, portable container made from coated fabric — typically PVC or TPU — used to store, transport, or deploy water and other liquids in locations where rigid infrastructure is impractical or too expensive to install.
Unlike rigid fibreglass or steel tanks, flexible tanks fold flat for shipping and storage, making them practical for remote sites, temporary installations, agricultural operations, emergency deployments, and large-scale export logistics.
Tank Formats: Which Shape Fits Your Application?
Pillow Tanks (Bladder Tanks)
The most common format for water storage. Pillow tanks rest flat on the ground and expand vertically as they fill. Well suited to open outdoor sites — agriculture, construction, aquaculture, emergency relief — where a level surface is available. Capacities range from 100 litres to 500,000 litres and above.
Cube Tanks (IBC-Style Flexible Tanks)
Cube-format flexible tanks are designed to fit inside an IBC cage or rigid frame, giving them a defined footprint and stackable profile. Used where horizontal space is limited or where the tank must interface with existing frame infrastructure.
Bladder Tanks (Enclosed)
Fully sealed on all sides with a single inlet/outlet. Common in underground installations, fuel storage applications, and systems where the tank must resist external pressure or must be concealed from view.
PVC vs TPU: Choosing the Right Material
Material selection is one of the most consequential decisions in a flexible tank specification. Both PVC and TPU perform well across a broad range of applications, but each has distinct characteristics.
PVC-Coated Fabric
PVC is the most widely used material for flexible water tanks. It offers an excellent cost-to-performance ratio, broad chemical compatibility for potable and non-potable water, UV resistance when correctly specified, and a mature supply chain that supports large production volumes and consistent colour availability. GSM ranges typically from 500 to 1100 depending on tank capacity and site requirements.
TPU-Coated Fabric
TPU offers lower handling weight at equivalent thickness, superior flexibility at low temperatures, and better abrasion resistance — making it the preferred choice for repeated deployment cycles, cold-climate operations, and applications where tank weight directly affects handling cost. Increasingly specified for emergency response equipment, high-cycle aquaculture systems, and projects with strict weight requirements.
How to Choose
For most standard agricultural, construction, and static storage applications, PVC is the correct starting point. Specify TPU when the application involves regular folding and unfolding, extended low-temperature exposure, or specific buyer performance requirements that PVC cannot meet.
Capacity Selection: How to Size Your Tank
Capacity sizing depends on four factors: daily demand, storage duration (how many days of supply the tank must hold), refill reliability, and site footprint constraints.
For construction sites, a common approach is to size for 3–5 days of peak site demand, accounting for delivery uncertainty. For agricultural irrigation, size for the driest period plus a 20% buffer. For emergency relief deployments, the standard is 15 litres per person per day, typically sized for 7–14 days of population supply.
Flexible tanks can be deployed in multiples across a site — this is often preferable to a single very large tank, as it provides redundancy and makes transport more manageable.
Key Specification Checklist
When requesting a quote, prepare the following to enable an accurate specification:
- Liquid type — potable water, irrigation, chemical, fuel, or other
- Required capacity — in litres or cubic metres
- Site surface — flat compacted earth, concrete pad, uneven terrain
- Outdoor exposure — direct UV, covered, or underground
- Temperature range — operating and storage temperatures
- Fittings required — inlet diameter, outlet type, vent, overflow, pressure rating
- Colour preference — available from stock or by special production order
- Order quantity — affects MOQ and production scheduling
- Destination and compliance — some markets require specific certifications such as AS/NZS 4020 for Australia and New Zealand
Compliance and Certifications
For potable water applications, material certification is non-negotiable. Relevant standards vary by destination market:
- Australia and New Zealand — AS/NZS 4020: Testing of products for use in contact with drinking water
- Europe — REACH compliance; EC 1935/2004 for food-contact applications
- International — ISO 9001 quality management certification confirms the manufacturing process meets documented quality standards

Factory Direct vs Trading Company
Most flexible tanks sold globally pass through at least one trading company before reaching the end buyer. This is not inherently a problem, but it creates information gaps that matter when specifications are complex or compliance documentation is required.
Buying factory direct means direct access to production engineers for specification questions, first-hand factory audit capability, traceable material sourcing, and cleaner communication when engineering changes or substitutions are needed mid-production.

Minimum order quantities vary by product type and specification. Standard products carry lower MOQs. Custom specifications — non-standard sizes, unique fitting configurations, or special materials — typically require a minimum production run to be cost-effective.
